Is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Right For You?

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a treatment option for menopausal women that helps restore hormone levels in the body. It involves supplementing estrogen, progesterone, or both to relieve symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and bone loss. HRT comes in various forms, including pills, patches, creams, and injections. We will tailor our approach based on your health needs.

Benefits of HRT

Risks of HRT

Ongoing Fertility: Despite a decline in fertility as women move through perimenopause or transition into menopause, it is still possible for a woman on HRT (because of its low dose) to become pregnant- ongoing contraception or alternate methods should be considered.

Not Suitable for Everyone – Individuals with a history of certain cancer, blood clots or a history of a heart problem may need further medical evaluation and discussion with Dr Dawson. Lastly, a woman may not want to take these hormone regimens. We fully support that decision and offer diet, exercise, and other options for all our patients as part of our shared decision-making approach to care.

Possible Side Effects – Some may experience bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, and nausea, which are usually temporary.

Slightly Increased Risk of Blood Clots & Stroke – Hormone replacement therapy, which includes both estrogen and progestin, is often used for managing symptoms of menopause or as part of birth control regimens. These hormones can affect blood clotting mechanisms, potentially increasing the risk of thromboembolic events such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and stroke. The risk varies depending on several factors, including the individual's age, overall health, smoking status, and the specific formulation and route of administration of the hormone therapy.

Requires Personalized Monitoring – The risks of HRT vary depending on several factors, including the individual's age, overall health, smoking status, and the specific formulation and route of administration of the hormone therapy. Dosage, treatment plans and response to therapy should be regularly reviewed with shared decision-making between a woman and Dr. Dawson, with any modifications adopted following these sessions.

Breast Cancer Risk & HRT

In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) announced that HRT caused an increased risk of breast cancer. Almost overnight, most women stopped their HRT, and doctors stopped prescribing it- a fact that sadly remains today. The association of HRT and breast cancer has been clearly refuted; even the authors of the WHI have retracted and published these data. Marty Makary, MD, stated, “In looking at the total body of medical research on the topic, the results are overwhelming. In analyzing 30 trials with a total of 26,708 women participants, HRT was not associated with an increase in cancer mortality in fact those women who took HRT lived longer. In a subset of 17 trials in which women began HRT before the age of 60, HRT was associated with a reduction of total mortality of 39%. The data are clear. HRT saves lives.”
